Solution to inaccurate measurement results of desktop pH meter
Date: 2025-08-11Read: 0
As a basic laboratory testing equipment, the accuracy of a desktop pH meter directly affects the reliability of experimental data. When measurement deviations occur, it is necessary to systematically investigate the following key steps and take targeted measures to correct them.
1、 Calibration failure or improper operation
Root cause of the problem: Failure to calibrate regularly, expired calibration solution, or incorrect calibration process.
Diagnostic method:
-Check the shelf life of the calibration solution (usually 1 year), and replace it immediately if it is cloudy or crystalline;
-Observe whether the slope after calibration is close to the theoretical value (approximately 59.16 mV/pH at 25 ℃);
-Confirm whether the calibration sequence conforms to the "low → high" principle (such as pH 4.00 → 7.00 → 10.01).
Solution:
1. Use freshly prepared standard buffer (NIST certified) for recalibration;
2. Perform two-point or three-point calibration (depending on accuracy requirements) to ensure that the calibration curve covers the pH range of the sample;
3. Verify with a third-party standard solution (such as a mixed phosphate solution) after calibration.
2、 Decreased electrode performance
Root cause of the problem: glass film aging, reference electrode blockage, or electrolyte leakage.
Typical symptoms: slow response (>30 seconds), reading drift, poor repeatability.
Repair measures:
1. Activation treatment: Soak the electrode in a 3% KCl solution for 2 hours to restore the hydration layer of the glass film;
2. Clean the electrode: Dip degreasing cotton in anhydrous ethanol and gently wipe the glass film to remove oil stains; If the reference electrode is blocked, use a syringe to draw warm water and rinse the salt bridge channel;
3. Replacement of accessories: If the liquid filling in the electrode is turbid or there are bubbles, a new electrode needs to be replaced; When the reference electrode is dry, add saturated KCl solution and let it stand overnight.
3、 Environmental and sample interference
Root cause of the problem: temperature fluctuations, high conductivity, or sample containing interfering substances.
Analysis of influencing factors:
-For every temperature deviation of 25 ℃, the pH reading changes by approximately 0.003 pH units;
-High salt samples (>1M) will produce liquid junction potential errors;
-Oxidizing/reducing agents can damage the electrode membrane structure.
Response strategy:
1. Enable temperature compensation function (ATC probe) and measure the sample temperature;
2. Use equipotential point calibration method for complex matrix samples (calibrated with standard substances of similar matrices);
3. Rinse the electrodes thoroughly with deionized water before and after testing to avoid cross contamination.
4、 Instrument hardware malfunction
Root cause of the problem: poor cable contact, amplifier module drift, or abnormal display screen.
Self checking steps:
1. Check if there is an oxide layer on the electrode interface and polish the connector contacts with sandpaper;
2. Short circuit the electrode input terminal to simulate the signal and observe whether the display screen can display the full range voltage;
3. Compare different channels to measure the same sample and determine if it is a specific channel fault.
Repair plan:
-Replace specialized cables with good shielding performance;
-Contact the manufacturer for motherboard calibration or replacement of signal processing module;
-Avoid frequent power on and off to reduce stress damage caused by thermal expansion and contraction of electronic components.
By following the above steps step by step, over 90% of pH measurement deviation issues can be resolved. If the error still cannot be eliminated, it is recommended to contact the manufacturer's technical support for in-depth diagnosis. Regular maintenance and standardized operation are key to ensuring the accuracy of pH meters. It is recommended to establish instrument logs to record calibration, maintenance, and abnormal situations for easy traceability and analysis.
