What are the application areas of phase sequence controllers?
Date: 2025-06-24Read: 24

Phase sequence controller is a device used to detect the phase sequence of three-phase power supply and automatically protect it in case of phase sequence errors or missing phases. Its application areas cover multiple industrial and civilian scenarios. The following analysis is conducted from the industry dimension:

1、 Industrial Automation and Power Systems
Electric motor driven equipment
Application scenarios: Three phase motor-driven equipment such as fans, water pumps, compressors, and machine tool spindles.
Function: To prevent motor reversal caused by reverse phase sequence (such as water pump reversal reducing head, compressor reversal damaging valve disc), or motor overheating and burnout caused by phase loss.
Case: In the aeration fan system of a sewage treatment plant, the phase sequence controller monitors the power phase sequence in real time. If the phase sequence is incorrect, the power supply is cut off to avoid the fan reversing and affecting the aeration efficiency.
Production line transmission system
Application scenarios: Conveyor rollers in automotive production lines, spindle drive devices in textile machinery.
Function: Ensure that multiple motors rotate synchronously in the forward direction, avoiding production line lag or material conveying direction errors caused by phase sequence confusion.
2、 HVAC and refrigeration equipment
Central air conditioning unit
Application scenarios: High power refrigeration equipment such as chillers and screw compressors.
Function: To prevent phase sequence errors from causing the compressor to reverse, damaging the lubricating oil circulation system, and causing equipment to lock up.
Case: In the central air conditioning system of a large shopping mall, the phase sequence controller is interlocked with the compressor. Once an abnormal phase sequence is detected, the system will immediately shut down to avoid high maintenance costs caused by compressor damage.
Industrial refrigeration unit
Application scenarios: Food freezer, chemical reactor cooling system.
Characteristics: The refrigeration system requires high stability. Phase loss or incorrect phase sequence can lead to abnormal condensation pressure and even refrigerant leakage.
3、 Construction and Engineering Machinery
Construction elevators and tower cranes
Application scenarios: Vertical transportation equipment for construction sites, slewing mechanisms for tower cranes.
Function: To prevent phase sequence errors from causing elevator cars to lose control or tower cranes to rotate in opposite directions, thus avoiding safety accidents.
Security mechanism: The phase sequence controller is linked with the equipment control system, and in case of abnormalities, the power supply is cut off and an alarm is triggered.
Concrete mixing equipment
Application scenarios: hydraulic drive motors for mixers in mixing plants and concrete pump trucks.
Impact: Incorrect phase sequence can cause the mixing shaft to reverse, affecting the uniformity of concrete and even damaging the mixing blades.
4、 Energy and Power Systems
Generator grid connection control
Application scenarios: Grid connected systems for photovoltaic inverters and diesel generators.
Function: To detect whether the phase sequence of the power grid is consistent with the output phase sequence of the generator, ensure phase synchronization during grid connection, and avoid short circuit faults caused by phase differences.
Technical requirements: The phase sequence controller needs to be coordinated with the synchronization device, and the accuracy requirement should be within ± 1 ° phase difference.
Substation auxiliary equipment
Application scenarios: Transformer cooling fans, energy storage motors for high-voltage switches.
Function: Ensure the normal operation of auxiliary equipment and avoid poor heat dissipation or switch refusal of the main equipment due to phase sequence problems.
5、 Petrochemical and Process Industry
Reaction kettle stirring system
Application scenarios: Mixing motors for chemical synthesis reactors and petroleum refining equipment.
Risk: Incorrect phase sequence can lead to opposite mixing directions, affecting the uniformity of material mixing and even causing uncontrolled reactions.
Case: The esterification reactor on the polyester production line is interlocked with the phase sequence controller and DCS system, which automatically cuts off the mixing motor and starts the backup power supply in case of abnormalities.
Pump conveying system
Application scenarios: Crude oil transfer pumps, chemical raw material metering pumps.
Impact: Phase loss operation can cause overheating of the pump body, flow fluctuations, and even damage to the impeller due to cavitation.
6、 Civil and commercial equipment
Elevators and escalators
Application scenarios: Drive systems for elevators in high-rise residential buildings and escalators in shopping malls.
Safety requirement: Phase sequence errors can cause the elevator car to run in the opposite direction of instructions, posing a risk of falling. Therefore, phase sequence detection is an essential part of the elevator safety circuit.
Large commercial kitchen equipment
Application scenario: Three phase motor equipment such as commercial dishwashers and noodle machines in hotels.
Function: To prevent equipment reversal caused by phase sequence errors (such as dishwasher spray arm reversal affecting cleaning effectiveness), and to avoid motor burnout caused by phase loss.
