Introduction and Principle Analysis of the Structure of a Single Wire Vertical Combustion Testing Machine
Date: 2025-10-11Read: 2
A single wire vertical combustion testing machine (usually referred to as a vertical combustion tester) is a device used to test the combustion performance of materials, especially wires and cables. It is commonly used to evaluate the reaction characteristics of materials under the influence of a fire source, especially the characteristics of combustion in the vertical direction. This test meets the requirements of international standards and is widely used in industries such as wire and cable, insulation materials, and building materials.
1. Introduction to the structure of a single wire vertical combustion testing machine
The single wire vertical combustion testing machine mainly consists of the following parts:
(1) Combustion chamber (test chamber)
Function: Provide a closed testing environment to ensure the stability and controllability of the experimental process.
Structure: The combustion chamber is usually made of high-temperature resistant materials (such as stainless steel or aluminum alloy), and the temperature and airflow inside can be adjusted. It includes a flame generation section, an airflow regulation section, and an observation window.
(2) Fire source system
Function: To provide a stable ignition source for testing samples.
Structure: The fire source system generally consists of a standardized flame generator (such as acetylene/oxygen flame), which can adjust the length, shape, and intensity of the flame. The heat of the flame and the contact time with the fire source have a significant impact on the test results.
(3) Sample fixture
Function: Keep the cable or material to be tested in the designated position and ensure that the sample is vertically fixed.
Structure: Fixtures can usually be adjusted in height to ensure that the sample is suspended vertically. Fixture design should avoid any impact on the sample to ensure the fairness of testing.
(4) Temperature control system
Function: Control and monitor the temperature inside the combustion chamber to ensure that the temperature is within the specified range.
Structure: Usually composed of temperature control instruments, sensors, heating devices, etc. The temperature sensor monitors the internal temperature of the combustion chamber in real-time to ensure precise control of the experimental process.
(5) Combustion gas collection system
Function: Collect and analyze gases and smoke generated during the experimental process to evaluate the toxicity of the sample and the release of harmful gases.
Structure: Usually equipped with gas extraction devices and gas analyzers, it can measure the concentration of harmful gases such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, etc.
(6) Observation window and lighting system
Function: Provide experimental operators with a way to observe the experimental process.
Structure: The testing machine is equipped with a transparent observation window that is resistant to high temperatures and flames, and is also equipped with a lighting system to ensure visibility during the experimental process.
(7) Smoke exhaust and exhaust gas treatment device
Function: Safely handle smoke and harmful gases generated during the experimental process, ensuring the safety of the experimental environment.
Structure: The exhaust emission device usually includes exhaust ducts, filtering devices, and smoke exhaust outlets to ensure that the exhaust gas does not cause pollution to the laboratory environment.
(8) Timer and automatic stop device
Function: Record testing time and control the start and end of testing.
Structure: The timer is used to precisely control the test time, and the automatic stop device can automatically terminate the test after reaching the set time.
2. Principle analysis of single wire vertical combustion testing machine
The testing principle of the single wire vertical combustion testing machine is to simulate the reaction performance of materials under actual fire conditions. The specific principle is as follows:
(1) Ignite the fire source
Fix the test sample (such as cable or wire) in a vertical position. Then, ignite the standard fire source (usually an acetylene/oxygen flame), and the length, size, and temperature of the flame can be adjusted according to the standard requirements.
The fire source usually comes into contact with the surface of the sample for a certain period of time (e.g. 30 seconds, 60 seconds, etc.), which directly affects the intensity of combustion.
(2) Sample reaction and combustion process
After igniting the fire source, the flame comes into contact with the sample, causing the surface of the sample to heat up and ignite. Different materials react differently, some may burn rapidly and spread, while others may stall on their own.
During the testing process, observe whether the sample will continue to burn, drip molten material, and the speed of flame propagation, all of which will affect the final combustion level assessment.
(3) Combustion data collection
During the combustion process, the testing instrument will collect real-time combustion data of the sample, including flame height, combustion time, extinguishing time, smoke production, and gas emissions.
Through these data, the reaction characteristics of materials in fires can be evaluated, such as the duration of combustion, flame spread rate, smoke volume, etc.
(4) Result analysis and evaluation
According to the test results, the samples will be evaluated for different combustion levels, usually using standardized rating systems (such as UL, IEC standards, etc.).
By comparing the combustion characteristics of different materials, testers can understand their safety in practical use and evaluate their tolerance to fires.
3. Conclusion
The single wire vertical combustion testing machine is a device used to evaluate the combustion characteristics of wires, cables, and other materials under the action of a fire source. Through this experiment, the performance of different materials in fire environments can be understood, providing data support for product safety certification. By optimizing experimental methods and improving equipment, the testing accuracy has been improved, providing a guarantee for the research and application of materials.
