UV Pre treatment Testing Machine: Accelerating the Stage of 'Sunshine Aging' in the Laboratory
Date: 2025-12-14Read: 0

What happens to the materials after a year of outdoor exposure? Plastic becoming brittle, coating fading, rubber cracking... These seemingly slow aging processes are actually 80% directly related to ultraviolet (UV) radiation in sunlight. In order to "foresee" the weather resistance performance years later in just a few days, the UV Pre conditioning Tester has emerged. It is like a "time accelerator" that concentrates sunlight, rain, high temperature, and condensation into one box, providing fast and reliable aging data for coatings, plastics, rubber, textiles, photovoltaic modules, and even sewage disinfection processes. This article will comprehensively introduce this' Sunshine Simulator 'from five dimensions: working principle, structural composition, core applications, operational points, and cutting-edge trends.

1、 Working principle: Using "lamp tube+temperature and humidity" to replicate outdoor aging

The core idea of the UV pre-treatment testing machine is the "accelerated aging test method": specific wavelength UV lamps (usually UV-A 320-400 nm and UV-B 280-320 nm) are installed inside the box, and environmental factors such as tropical strong light, coastal high humidity, desert dry heat, etc. are simulated by controlling the irradiation intensity (0.5-1.5 W/m ²), blackboard temperature (40-80 ℃), and relative humidity (30% -95% RH). After absorbing high-energy photons on the surface of the material, molecular chains break, oxidize, and recombine, exhibiting aging characteristics such as color difference, decreased gloss, cracks, powdering, and reduced tensile strength. By comparing the performance retention rate before and after the experiment, the weather resistance level and service life can be evaluated.

2、 Structural composition: Four major modules collaborate to 'stage' aging

1. UV light source

-Lamp tube: The mainstream in China adopts 8-40 UVA-340 or UVB-313 fluorescent lamps with a lifespan of ≥ 1800 hours. The model is equipped with water-cooled xenon lamps or LED-UV, with adjustable energy of 1% -100% and a lifespan of ≥ 5000 hours.

-Uniformity of irradiation: staggered arrangement of lamps+aluminum parabolic reflector plate, surface uniformity of the sample is ≤± 10%, meeting the requirements of ASTM G154 and ISO 4892-3.

2. Temperature and humidity control system

-Heating: Nickel chromium alloy heating plate attached to the box wall, PID temperature control ± 2 ℃;

-Humidification: Boiler steam or ultrasonic atomization, humidity fluctuation ± 3% RH;

-Condensation: At night, the program automatically heats up to 85 ℃ and quickly cools down to 50 ℃ to form condensation, simulating outdoor morning dew erosion.

3. Sample rack and drum

-Flat type: suitable for board and film, sample tilted 5 ° -10 ° to avoid water accumulation;

-Drum type: The cylindrical frame rotates 360 ° to ensure that all samples receive equal doses of irradiation, especially suitable for photovoltaic modules and automotive coatings.

4. Measurement and software

-Irradiance closed-loop: UVA/UVB dual channel sensors provide real-time feedback and automatically adjust the lamp power to ensure a set value of ± 0.5%;

-Multi segment program: capable of programming 100 segments of "irradiation condensation spray darkness" cycle, with one click access to national, American, and European standard templates;

-Data traceability: Temperature, humidity, irradiation dose, and running time are automatically written to CSV, supporting USB export and LIMS docking.

3、 Typical applications: from "paint fading" to "sewage disinfection"

1. Coatings and plastics

After 200 hours of UVB-313 (0.89 W/m ², 60 ℃) treatment, the adhesion of a certain industrial coating decreased by 35%, and the color difference Δ E=3.2. The company added 2% HALS light stabilizer based on this, and after 12 months of outdoor exposure, Δ E<1.5, it passed Qualicoat certification.

2. Automotive exterior decoration

After UVA-340 (0.76 W/m ², 50 ℃, 95% RH condensation) for 500 hours, the tensile strength retention rate of the polypropylene bumper is ≥ 80%, meeting the VW PV 3930 standard; The fiber drum testing machine can hold 45 whole pieces at a time, saving 70% of testing time.

3. Photovoltaic modules

The solar panel needs to be pre treated at 60 ℃ and UVA-340 15 kWh/m ², followed by thermal cycling, wet freezing, and wet heat testing. The UV pre-treatment testing machine achieves irradiation uniformity of ≤± 5% and ensures component power attenuation of<5% through the cross arrangement of 48 lamps and servo moving frame, in compliance with IEC 61215 requirements.

4. Rubber and Textile

The car sealing strip undergoes a three in one cycle of UV+ozone+high temperature, reducing the cracking level from level 4 to level 2, guiding enterprises to replace anti ozone wax and anti-aging agent formulas; After 1000 hours of UVA-340 exposure, the tensile strength retention rate of outdoor tent fabric is ≥ 70%, meeting the EN 13561 sunshade standard.

5. Sewage disinfection pretreatment

Ultraviolet radiation itself is also an efficient and green disinfection process. A certain reclaimed water plant increased the UV dose by 13 mJ/cm ² after sand filtration, resulting in a total coliform count of less than 100 CFU/L, which reduced by-products by 24% compared to chlorine disinfection alone; The UV pre-treatment testing machine is used here to verify the aging curve of the lamp tube and the dose inactivation rate relationship, providing a basis for engineering scaling up.

4、 Operation points and safety of UV pre-treatment testing machine: to prevent "acceleration" from losing control

1. Sample preparation

Clean the surface, record initial color difference and mechanical properties; If the thickness is greater than 3mm, holes need to be drilled for exhaust to avoid thermal expansion and deformation.

2. Parameter setting

First select the standard template (ASTM G154, ISO 4892-3, GB/T 16422.3), and then fine tune the irradiance and temperature; High energy UVB-313 is suitable for rapid screening, while UVA-340 is closer to the outdoor spectrum.

3. Mid term inspection

Take out the control sample every 48 hours and observe for cracks, pulverization, and discoloration; If water spraying is required, use deionized water with a conductivity of<5 μ S/cm to prevent spots.

4. Safety protection

-Ultraviolet radiation: The box door is equipped with an electromagnetic lock, which automatically locks during operation; The observation window is made of UVA-B blocking acrylic, with a transmittance of less than 1%;

-Ozone: The lamp produces an ozone concentration of up to 0.2 ppm, and the top of the box is equipped with an ozone catalytic decomposition device and exhaust. The outlet concentration is less than 0.05 ppm, which meets OSHA standards;

-High temperature burns: Aluminum foil insulation layer is added on the inside of the door, and the outer surface is below 45 ℃; The emergency stop button cuts off the lamp and heating with one click.

5. Maintain calibration

-Lamp lifespan: After 1800 hours, the irradiance of the fluorescent tube decreases by more than 15% and needs to be replaced in pairs; Re calibrate the xenon lamp after 500 hours;

-Irradiance calibration: Measure at 6 points on the sample plane every 500 hours using a traceability UV illuminance meter. If the deviation is greater than ± 5%, adjust the power or replace the lamp tube;

-Sensor cleaning: Clean the quartz window with an alcohol swab every week to prevent dust from blocking and causing low readings.

5、 Frontier trends: smarter, more energy-efficient, and more composite

-LED-UV+AI algorithm: single wavelength 365 nm LED array, lifespan>20000 h, energy consumption reduced by 60%; AI dynamically adjusts the irradiation dose based on the sample aging rate, shortening the testing cycle by another 30%;

-Spectral adjustable: Xenon lamp and filter wheel can be switched freely between 280-800 nm, achieving "UV+visible+near-infrared" full spectrum aging and simulating high-altitude strong radiation environment;

-Low temperature condensation+salt spray composite: adding 5% NaCl salt spray to the UV cycle to reproduce coastal corrosion aging coupling, providing an accelerated evaluation method for offshore wind turbine blades;

-Digital twin: Establishing a material aging model through sensor big data, predicting outdoor color changes over 10 years with an error of less than 10%, and assisting in product life insurance calculations;

-Green cold light source: using 185 nm vacuum ultraviolet+254 nm ultraviolet synergistic ozone oxidation for deep sewage treatment, COD removal rate can reach 98.6%, realizing the transition from "aging testing machine" to "environmental protection equipment".
