Dissolved oxygen (DO) is a core parameter for evaluating water quality and controlling biochemical processes, and electrode selection directly affects the reliability of measurement data and operating costs. This article provides a complete selection plan to help users make better choices under different working conditions.
1、 Technical route selection: Fluorescence method vs. Polarography method
1. Fluorescent electrode (modern mainstream)
Principle: Based on the fluorescence quenching effect, blue light excites sensitive substances to emit red light, and the concentration of oxygen molecules is inversely proportional to the intensity/lifetime of the red light
Advantage:
No need for electrolyte, zero maintenance; No oxygen consumption, no flow rate requirement; Fast response time (<30 seconds); Strong anti pollution ability.
Disadvantage: High initial investment
Applicable scenarios: sewage treatment, aquaculture, long-term monitoring stations
2. Polarographic electrode (classical technique)
Principle: Based on the Clark battery principle, oxygen molecules are reduced at the cathode to generate an electric current.
Advantages: Mature technology and low cost; High precision measurement (± 0.1% FS).
Disadvantages:
Regular replacement of electrolyte/permeable membrane is required; Require constant flow velocity (>15cm/s); The response time is relatively long (45-90 seconds).
Applicable scenarios: laboratory analysis, budget limited projects, clean water bodies
2、 Key selection parameter matrix
| operating condition characteristics | Recommended Technology | Key configurations | precision requirement |
| sewage treatment plant | fluorescence method | Self cleaning coating, IP68 protection | ±0.1 mg/L |
| aquaculture | fluorescence method | Anti biological attachment, real-time alarm | ±0.2 mg/L |
| laboratory research | polarography | Portable, automatic temperature compensation | ±0.05 mg/L |
| River/Lake Monitoring | fluorescence method | Solar powered, wireless transmission | ±0.15 mg/L |
| Fermentation process control | polarography | High temperature sterilization resistance, online calibration | ±0.5% |
3、 Deep analysis of adaptability to working conditions
1. Sewage treatment process
Aerobic tank: using fluorescent electrodes, capable of withstanding sludge concentrations of 3000-5000 mg/L
Hypoxia pool: Ensure DO<0.5 mg/L, and the electrode should have ultra-low range detection capability
Secondary sedimentation tank: equipped with anti clogging design to cope with low flow velocity (<5cm/s) environment
2. Aquaculture management
Seawater environment: Anti seawater corrosion type electrodes (titanium alloy shell) must be selected
High density aquaculture: Real time monitoring of 0-20 mg/L wide range, response time<15 seconds
Circulating water system: integrated temperature and pH multi parameter monitoring function
3. Environmental water monitoring
Float station: Choose low-power design and support solar charging
Emergency monitoring: Portable device, tested immediately upon startup, no need for preheating
4、 Special working condition response plan
1. High temperature and high pressure environment
Fermentation tank: Select SIP sterilization electrode that can withstand 120 ℃
Deep sea monitoring: pressure rating ≥ 1 MPa
2. Strongly corrosive media
Chemical wastewater: using Hastelloy shell and ceramic sensor
Seawater monitoring: equipped with anti biological adhesion copper alloy sheath
3. Hygiene level requirements
Food and beverage: Made of 316L stainless steel, 3-A certified.
Pharmaceutical industry: Supports CIP/SIP cleaning.
5、 Whole life cycle cost optimization
1. Initial investment
Fluorescence method: high equipment unit price and low consumables cost.
Polarography: The equipment unit price is low, and the annual consumable cost is about 15-20% of the equipment price.
2. Maintenance costs
Fluorescence method: only requires regular cleaning, with maintenance intervals of 3-6 months.
Polarography: The membrane/electrolyte needs to be replaced, with a maintenance interval of 2-8 weeks.
3. Service life
Fluorescence method: 3-5 years (sensor)
Polarographic method: 1-2 years (core components need to be replaced)
