Optimization Techniques for Photron High Speed Camera Shooting Parameters

1Photron high-speed cameraResolution setting
Select according to shooting requirements
High resolution (such as 4K) is suitable for scenes that require capturing more details, such as material microcrack analysis or biological cell motion research.
Low resolution (such as 720P) is suitable for scenarios that require high storage space and data processing speed, such as long-term monitoring or preliminary analysis of rapidly moving objects.
Balancing image quality and storage
High resolution will significantly increase the amount of data, and it is necessary to ensure sufficient storage capacity (such as Photron supporting a maximum of 64GB of memory).
By using Photron's "Variable Frame Rate · Resolution Function", the combination of resolution and frame rate can be flexibly adjusted to meet different shooting needs.
2、 Frame rate setting
Choose based on the speed of movement
High frame rates (such as 3600fps or above) are suitable for capturing high-speed motion processes, such as explosions, collisions, or fluid dynamics research.
Low frame rates (such as below 1000fps) are suitable for scenes that do not require high temporal resolution, such as general industrial detection or biological motion analysis.
Avoid data overload
A high frame rate will significantly increase the amount of data, and it is necessary to ensure that the storage read and write speed is sufficient (such as Photron supporting high-speed storage, with a data read and write speed of up to 1.5GB/s).
By using Photron's "segmented shooting" function, high frame rate shooting can be performed for key events to reduce invalid data.
3、 Exposure time setting
Adjust according to lighting conditions
Short exposure times (such as microsecond level) are suitable for clear capture of high-speed moving objects, but may reduce image brightness and require high brightness lighting (such as Photron recommending using non flickering lighting).
Long exposure time is suitable for low light environments, but it can cause motion blur and needs to be balanced based on the speed of the subject's movement and lighting conditions.
Avoid motion blur
Excessive exposure time can cause motion blur, and it is necessary to ensure that the exposure time is less than 1/10 of the object's movement distance (for example, if the object moves 10mm per second, the exposure time should be less than 1ms).
By using Photron's "high-speed shutter" function, the fastest speed can reach 1 μ s (1/1000000 second), effectively reducing motion blur.
4、 Parameter optimization techniques
The trade-off between resolution and frame rate
High resolution and high frame rate will constrain each other and need to be balanced according to shooting requirements. For example, at 1024 × 1024 pixels, the Photron FASTCAM SA4 can achieve 3600fps, while at 512 × 512 pixels, the frame rate can be increased to 13500fps.
Matching exposure time and frame rate
The exposure time should match the frame rate to ensure sufficient and non overlapping exposure for each frame of the image. For example, at 1000fps, the exposure time should be less than 1ms.
Use professional software for post-processing
By using the PFV software provided by Photron, post-processing of captured images can be performed, such as denoising, sharpening, etc., to further improve image quality.
5、 Precautions
environmental control
Ensure a clean shooting environment and avoid distractions that may interfere with the image.
Control the temperature and humidity at the filming location to minimize the impact on camera performance.
regular maintenance
Regularly clean the lens and body of the camera to remove dust and stains and maintain image clarity.
Regularly check and upgrade the firmware of Photron high-speed cameras to obtain the latest features and performance optimizations.
