What aspects are related to the stability of solar cells
Date: 2025-12-10Read: 2
The stability of solar cells is the core factor determining their long-term reliability and commercial application, involving the synergistic effects of five dimensions: material properties, device structure, environmental stress, packaging protection, and production processes. The following analysis will be conducted from key aspects:
1、 Intrinsic stability and aging resistance of materials
-Inherent defects in semiconductor materials
-Perovskite materials are prone to ion migration and decomposition (photo induced degradation) under illumination, while organic photovoltaic materials are highly sensitive to oxygen and water vapor, leading to oxidation or phase separation of the active layer. For example, the efficiency of unencapsulated perovskite cells drops sharply after several hours of continuous light exposure, due to chemical bond breakage and lead iodide byproduct precipitation at the interface between the perovskite layer and the charge transport layer. In addition, high temperature accelerates the thermal decomposition of materials, and the reaction between ordinary electrode materials and perovskite is also one of the important reasons.
-Breakthrough in Additives and Passivation Technology
-For perovskite batteries, ionic liquids containing ethylene glycol ether side chains can suppress the activity of uncoordinated lead ions through strong coordination, reduce film defect density, and form stable "bridges" between perovskite and charge transport layers, significantly delaying interface degradation. This type of molecular design strategy allows the device to maintain over 80% initial efficiency even after hundreds of hours of UV irradiation.
2、 Device Structure Design and Interface Engineering
-Dynamic repair and reinforcement of interface layer
-Traditional static passivation is difficult to cope with the accumulation of defects under long-term light exposure. The latest research introduces molecules with reversible bonding ability (such as PFI) to achieve sustained capture and "self-healing" function of harmful free radicals, blocking self accelerating degradation channels. At the same time, "bridging molecules" form strengthened chemical bonds at the interface, upgrading physical contact to chemical anchoring, effectively suppressing ion migration and UV damage.
-Compatibility optimization of charge transport layer
-The electron/hole transport layer needs to balance efficient charge collection and interface stability. For example, semiconductor interface thin film materials such as ZnMgO or NiMgO can enhance the long-term stability of organic photovoltaic devices; In the perovskite system, the energy level matching between the NiO ₓ hole transport layer and the perovskite layer directly affects the interface recombination rate. If the transport layer material reacts with perovskite or experiences a mismatch in thermal expansion coefficient, it will accelerate delamination failure.
3、 Environmental stress and packaging protection effectiveness
-Coupling erosion of damp heat and ultraviolet radiation
-A high humidity environment can trigger the hydrolysis reaction of perovskite, resulting in the formation of hydrate products; Ultraviolet radiation induces the formation of superoxide, further corroding the active layer. International standards require components to remain stable at a high temperature of 85 ℃, but most perovskite cells still degrade rapidly under these conditions.
-The barrier effect of packaging technology
-Effective packaging requires the use of impermeable materials to isolate water and oxygen, such as epoxy resin combined with glass cover plates. However, existing packaging still cannot meet the 25 year lifespan requirement, and developing flexible barrier layers and self-healing coatings has become a new direction.
4、 Production process and quality control accuracy
-Crystal Growth and Defect Management
-A thickness deviation of>± 5% in screen printing can lead to discrete performance of battery cells; Microscopic cracks at the grain boundaries of perovskite propagate into macroscopic fractures during thermal cycling. By using statistical process control to screen homogeneous samples and regulating the crystallization process with ionic liquids, smooth films with low defect density can be obtained.
-Stability of electrode and transport layer processes
-Electrode preparation needs to ensure compactness to prevent moisture from entering. Process fluctuations, such as uneven annealing temperatures, can cause interface reactions and require precise temperature control through automated production lines.
5、 Test validation and failure mechanism analysis
-Multi stress accelerated aging model
-Relying solely on laboratory light source testing is not sufficient to predict outdoor performance. It is necessary to combine the damping oscillation method to monitor interface defects, the quasi steady state open circuit voltage decay method to capture carrier recombination dynamics, and use wavelet transform to process data noise and distinguish reversible drift from irreversible decay. Machine learning integrating multimodal data (electrical parameters+optical images) can provide early warning of failure risks.
-Outdoor empirical research and feedback iteration
-Building integrated photovoltaics need to undergo environmental tests such as humidity, salt spray, and mechanical loads. For example, applications in the transportation sector require components to resist bending stress and temperature cycling, while space photovoltaics require radiation resistant design. The leap from laboratory to commercialization can only be achieved by feeding back material formulas and structural optimization through actual scenario data.
