Deep analysis of the principle of differential scanning calorimeter: from heat flow model to data interpretation
Date: 2025-10-10Read: 1
Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) is a core tool in the field of thermal analysis, which deeply integrates thermodynamic laws and precision sensing technology. By quantifying the difference in heat flux between the sample and the reference material, it reveals the physical and chemical changes of the material when heated. The following provides a systematic analysis from the construction of heat flow models to data interpretation:
1、 Construction of Heat Flow Model: Energy Conservation and Dynamic Equilibrium
The core principle of DSC is based on the law of conservation of energy. When the sample undergoes melting, crystallization, glass transition, or chemical reaction, it is accompanied by heat absorption (endothermic) or release (exothermic), resulting in an instantaneous temperature difference between the sample and the reference material. The instrument independently controls the sample end and reference end through a dual heating/temperature measurement system:
Power compensation DSC: Two independent heaters are used to maintain consistent temperature at both ends by adjusting the power in real time, and the power difference (Δ W=dH/dt) is recorded as the heat flow signal.
Thermal flow DSC: The sample and reference material share a heating module, and the thermal difference (dQ/dt) between the two is measured by a thermal resistance sensor, directly reflecting the enthalpy change of the sample.
For example, in polymer testing, when the sample transitions from a glassy state to a highly elastic state, the increase in heat capacity leads to heat absorption. The instrument compensates for the power or measures the heat flux difference to form a "stepped" baseline shift on the DSC curve, corresponding to the glass transition temperature (Tg).
2、 Data interpretation: characteristic peaks and quantitative analysis
The DSC curve takes temperature (or time) as the horizontal axis and heat flux (mW/mg) as the vertical axis, extracting key information through the shape and position of characteristic peaks:
Glass transition (Tg): The baseline step reflects the change in heat capacity, and the midpoint of the step corresponds to Tg. The faster the heating rate, the more sensitive the step, but the rate needs to be controlled (such as 5 ℃/min) to avoid peak shape shift.
Melting and Crystallization (Tm/Tc): The melting peak is an endothermic convex peak, and the crystallization peak is an exothermic concave peak. The peak area is directly proportional to the enthalpy (Δ H), and the crystallinity can be calculated through the integration curve (such as the crystallinity of polyester film=100% × Δ Hm/Δ Hlit, where Δ Hlit is the melting enthalpy of the 100% crystal structure).
Oxidative stability: Under an oxygen atmosphere, material oxidation triggers an exothermic reaction, and the antioxidant performance is evaluated by recording the oxidation induction time (OIT).
3、 Technical advantages and error control
The core advantage of DSC over traditional differential thermal analysis (DTA) lies in its quantitative ability:
Baseline stability: DSC eliminates temperature differences through dynamic compensation, and baseline drift is significantly lower than DTA, ensuring peak area measurement accuracy.
Sensitivity and resolution: capable of detecting 0.1 μ W level heat flux changes, with temperature control accuracy of ± 0.1 ℃, suitable for weak thermal effect analysis (such as nanomaterial phase transition).
Sample adaptability: Supports powder, film, and block samples (with controlled size of ≤Φ 3mm × 2mm), and viscous samples require the use of sealed high-pressure crucibles.
4、 Application scenarios and cases
Polymer materials: Analyzing the crystallization behavior of PP/ZnO composites, it was found that ZnO, as a heterogeneous nucleating agent, can increase the crystallization temperature and rate.
In the pharmaceutical field, optimizing drug formulation processes through melting peak purity analysis to ensure the stability of active ingredients.
New energy materials: Evaluate the thermal safety of battery electrode materials and prevent the risk of thermal runaway.
5、 Operation points and precautions
Sample preparation: The dosage of powder sample is 3-5mg, and the block sample needs to be cut to the specified size to avoid heat transfer delay.
Heating rate: Rapid heating (such as 20 ℃/min) can enhance peak intensity, but it will reduce the separation between adjacent peaks; Slow heating (such as 2 ℃/min) is suitable for complex phase transition analysis.
Atmosphere control: Nitrogen is used for inert environment testing, and oxygen is used for oxidation induction period analysis, which needs to be selected according to the characteristics of the sample.
DSC achieves precise quantification of material thermal behavior through heat flow models and dynamic compensation techniques, providing irreplaceable data support for material research and development, process optimization, and quality control. The interpretation of its data requires a combination of peak shape, area, and baseline characteristics to fully reveal the thermodynamic nature of the material.
