SHARK Project Summary and Digital Presentation

We have come a long way, and Senfa has joined the SHARK EU project as a member of the consortium (supported by research and innovation funding from the EU Horizon 2020 framework program, grant agreement number 768701), which is currently nearing completion.

The purpose of this project is to demonstrate that it can industrialize laser functional textures without any specific added coatings.

During this period, 11 European Union partners (3 research institutions, 4 technology providers, and 5 end users in different markets) worked together to provide all our knowledge and experience to the group, enriching every process throughout the entire cycle.

In this case, especially Sensofar, which provided all its experience in the field of metrology, these new texture technologies were developed in this project, demonstrating the importance of incorporating optical surface metrology into current production processes.

Sen far's responsibilities are divided into four main areas:

Texture research and system recommendations:
In the SHARK project, the size of the sensor and measurement time are limitations on the in-situ characterization of the surface. The sum of 49 different textures from all end users, characterized by and determined as their optimal measurement technique. For applications with such strict requirements, Senspel has also developed a high-speed sensor, in which the basic technology is interferometric measurement, especially SI. Here, one of the products we adapt to is in our investment portfolio,

The second area is the online integration of the proposed system:
The Sen far development team involved in the project successfully redesigned a commercial sensor head to miniaturize it for integration into laser processing machines. Once again, Sen far has demonstrated its ability and competitive advantage in adapting to customer or solution needs.

The third field is dedicated to algorithm optimization to ensure speed and the rest of the required specifications
Due to the increase in data volume and data rate, the coherent scanning interferometry (CSI) algorithm has been implemented in GPUs to maximize data processing throughput and achieve real-time processing. A new compact Z-scanner has also been implemented and integrated with two specific light sources to ensure optimal performance of other optical technologies provided: Focus Variation and focusing.

Finally, integrate the optical system with the laser system and demonstrate its ability and feasibility for simultaneous operation.
At this stage of the project, a optomechanical change was implemented to adjust the optical path of the sensor head, focusing the laser beam onto a sample with appropriate optical components to achieve the desired laser wavelength.

So far, the project has achieved great success and successfully demonstrated significant functional performance in the case studies investigated (you can find an example here: "The effect of periodic surface texture generated by femtosecond laser on tool friction”)

We are satisfied with the possibility of integrating processes in such a complex production cycle with these characteristics, which is undoubtedly the best part of this project. It has been proven that by combining skills and sharing knowledge, the sky is the limit.

If you are curious about the design and industrialization of surface engineering, or if you want to learn more, we have organized a showcase and demonstration event about all the achievements of the SHARK project.
