A good way to extend the service life of desktop centrifuges
Date: 2025-08-19Read: 1
As a core separation equipment in fields such as biochemistry and medical testing, the stability of desktop centrifuges directly affects the accuracy of experimental results and the lifespan of the equipment. Scientific maintenance needs to run through the entire process of use, and the following key maintenance details are analyzed from multiple dimensions:
1、 Daily basic maintenance
1. Appearance and cavity cleaning
Instant cleaning: Immediately remove any sample residue from the centrifuge chamber after each use, paying special attention to the gaps between the rotor and basket to avoid protein or organic solvent corrosion of the metal surface;
Deep cleaning: Use neutral detergent to wipe the inner wall every week. For stubborn stains, use a soft bristled brush combined with a specialized enzymatic solution for treatment. It is strictly prohibited to use steel wire balls to scrape the anti-corrosion coating;
Drainage design: Models with drainage function need to regularly dump the collection tank to prevent waste liquid from flowing back and causing circuit short circuits.
2. Rotor status inspection
Visual inspection: Observe the rotor daily for any deformation, cracks, or rust marks, especially for aluminum alloy materials that are prone to micro cracking due to stress;
Dynamic balance verification: If there is abnormal noise or shaking, the machine should be stopped to check if the rotor is adsorbing foreign objects. If necessary, special weights should be used for static balance testing;
Speed limit management: Strictly operate at the maximum speed indicated on the rotor, as overspeed can lead to the accumulation of metal material fatigue.
2、 Periodic functional maintenance
1. Maintenance of transmission system
Bearing lubrication: Remove the protective cover every quarter and inject an appropriate amount of high-temperature silicone grease into the motor bearings (the amount should be sufficient to fill 2/3 of the bearing chamber). Excessive lubrication can actually exacerbate friction;
Belt tension adjustment: For older models that use V-belt transmission, if slippage is found, the tensioning wheel should be adjusted in a timely manner, and belts with severe wear should be replaced in groups.
2. Electrical system testing
Line security check: Check the outer skin of the power cord for damage and the degree of oxidation of the plug contact piece every month. If necessary, use sandpaper to polish the contact points;
Parameter calibration: Every year, a metrology institution is commissioned to calibrate the speed and timer, and the error should be controlled within ± 5%;
Cooling system cleaning: Clean the dust accumulation on the cooling fan filter every six months to ensure that the ventilation openings are not blocked.
3、 Standard operating procedures
1. Sample loading principle
Symmetrical balance: Centrifugal tubes must be placed diagonally symmetrically, with a mass difference of no more than 0.1g, and empty spaces need to be filled with balance tubes;
Capacity limitation: The liquid volume shall not exceed 80% of the nominal capacity of the centrifuge tube, and sufficient space shall be left for thermal expansion and contraction during high-speed centrifugation.
2. Start program control
Gradual acceleration: Start from low gear, wait for smooth operation, and then gradually increase the speed to the set value to avoid sudden high load impact on the motor;
Braking mode selection: When fragile samples are included, slow braking mode is used, while for ordinary samples, fast deceleration can be enabled to save time.
4、 Special scenario response
Corrosive sample treatment: When strong acid/alkali or organic solvents are involved, special rotors with PTFE sealing rings should be selected and rinsed after use;
Low temperature centrifugal preparation: The pre cooled rotor should be turned on 30 minutes in advance to 4 ℃ to avoid the formation of condensed water due to excessive temperature difference;
Emergency stop operation: In case of severe vibration or abnormal noise, immediately press the red emergency stop button instead of directly cutting off the power to prevent damage to the motherboard caused by recoil current.
5、 Long term idle maintenance
Rust prevention treatment: When not in use for more than one month, apply Vaseline to the surface of the rotor and wrap it with moisture-proof paper;
Periodic test run: Run the motor under no-load for 10 minutes every month and monitor whether it starts and stops normally;
Storage environment: Keep in a dry and ventilated place, avoiding direct sunlight that can cause plastic parts to age.
By establishing standardized maintenance procedures, the failure rate of centrifuges can be reduced by over 60%. The key is to integrate preventive maintenance into daily operations, which not only ensures experimental accuracy but also extends equipment service life. It is recommended that the laboratory establish equipment archives to record the maintenance time and replacement parts information for each maintenance, and achieve full lifecycle management.
