Solution of Solar Simulator in Plant Photosynthesis Research
Date: 2025-10-22Read: 2
The solar simulator plays a key role in the study of plant photosynthesis, providing a controllable experimental platform for studying plant light response mechanisms, optimizing cultivation environments, and increasing crop yields by accurately simulating natural light conditions. The solution needs to revolve around four core elements: spectral matching, light intensity adjustment, photoperiod control, and environmental integration.
1、 Spectral matching: restoring natural light quality
Plant photosynthesis is highly sensitive to light quality (wavelength), with chlorophyll a/b mainly absorbing blue light at 400-500nm and red light at 600-700nm. The solar simulator needs to use a full spectrum LED or xenon lamp light source, combined with a filtering system to accurately match the solar spectrum (AM1.5G standard), ensuring that the proportion of red and blue bands is consistent with natural light. For example, a certain type of simulator uses a customized LED array to set the ratio of red light (660nm) to blue light (450nm) to 5:1, while supplementing with far red light (730nm) to adjust the light form and fully reproduce the actual light environment of plants.
2、 Dynamic adjustment of light intensity: simulating day and night and shading
The photosynthetic rate of plants shows a nonlinear response to changes in light intensity. The simulator needs to support continuous adjustment of light intensity from 0-2000 μ mol/m ²/s, and be equipped with light attenuation sheets or electronic dimming modules to simulate instantaneous shading (such as cloud cover) or gradual light intensity (such as sunrise and sunset). When studying the light saturation point of C4 plants (such as corn), the photosynthetic rate light intensity curve can be accurately measured by stepwise increasing the light intensity (with a step size of 200 μ mol/m ²/s).
3、 Photoperiod and Pulse Control: Adapting to Plant Rhythms
There is a significant difference in the photoperiod requirements between short day plants (such as soybeans) and long day plants (such as wheat). The simulator needs to integrate a timer and pulse light function, supporting 12h light/12h dark or continuous light modes. For example, in the study of Arabidopsis flowering, setting a 16 hour long day condition can induce a transition from vegetative growth to reproductive growth, verifying the expression patterns of photoperiod genes such as CO and FT.
4、 Environmental Integration: Multi factor Collaborative Regulation
By combining the temperature and humidity control system, CO ₂ injection module, and airflow device, the simulator can construct a "light temperature air" coupled environment. When studying the mechanism of photosynthetic inhibition in rice under high temperature stress, the damage threshold of photosynthetic institutions was revealed by synchronously increasing light intensity (1500 μ mol/m ²/s) and temperature (35 ℃), monitoring changes in stomatal conductance, transpiration rate, and non photochemical quenching (NPQ) parameters.
5、 Application Cases and Data Validation
A team used a solar simulator to study the effect of LED spectra on lettuce growth and found that under a red blue ratio of 4:1, the dry matter accumulation of lettuce increased by 23% compared to traditional fluorescent lamps, and the vitamin C content increased by 18%. Through long-term monitoring (60 days), the correlation between simulator data and growth indicators under natural light reached 0.92, verifying its reliability as an alternative to natural light.
6、 Technology Trends and Selection Suggestions
Currently, simulators are developing towards high uniformity (spatial light intensity difference<5%), fast response (millisecond dimming), and intelligence (IoT integration). When selecting, special attention should be paid to spectral matching (AM1.5G deviation<10%), light intensity stability (± 2%), and after-sales service. Priority should be given to systems that support multi-channel independent control to meet complex experimental design requirements.
