Working principle and core technology analysis of digital temperature and humidity meter
Date: 2025-12-05Read: 0
Modern digital hygrometers are no longer simply substitutes for pointers, but rather miniature intelligent systems that integrate sensing, signal processing, digital compensation, and communication. Its core lies in converting the physical quantities of temperature and humidity in the environment into stable, reliable, and directly interpretable digital signals through a series of precision technologies.
1、 Sensing principle: the first conversion of physical quantities
The cornerstone of its performance is an integrated temperature and humidity sensor chip, typically using a combination of capacitive polymer film humidity sensors and semiconductor resistive sensors (such as Pt100, thermistors) or digital temperature sensors (such as DS18B20).
Humidity measurement: The core is a polymer film capacitor that is sensitive to water molecules. When the environmental humidity changes, water molecules adsorb/desorb to the film, causing a change in its dielectric constant and resulting in a change in capacitance value. The change is highly correlated with the relative humidity (RH%) as a function.
Temperature measurement: High precision semiconductor temperature measuring components are usually used. The resistance value varies regularly with temperature (such as the platinum resistance Pt100 being 100 Ω at 0 ℃), and the temperature can be accurately inferred by measuring the resistance.
2、 Signal Chain and Digitization: A Precise Journey from Analog to Digital
The weak analog signals (capacitance changes, resistance changes) output by sensors require precise signal conditioning to be accurately read:
Signal conditioning: A dedicated integrated circuit converts capacitance changes into voltage signals, amplifies and filters them to improve signal-to-noise ratio.
Analog to Digital Conversion (ADC): A high-resolution ADC converts amplified analog voltage signals into digital codes that can be processed by a microprocessor. This is a crucial step in achieving 'digital' output.
3、 Intelligent Core: Algorithm Compensation and Calibration
This is the technical core that ensures accuracy and long-term stability. The raw digital signal will be processed by complex algorithms with built-in microprocessors:
Temperature compensation: The characteristics of humidity sensors are significantly affected by temperature. Therefore, it is necessary to use the precise temperature values measured simultaneously and perform real-time correction of humidity readings through built-in compensation algorithms (usually based on lookup tables or mathematical models) to eliminate temperature interference.
Nonlinear correction: The output of the sensor does not have a suitable linear relationship with temperature and humidity. Before leaving the factory, the chip will undergo multi-point calibration in a constant temperature and humidity chamber, and the calibration coefficients (such as lookup tables or formula parameters) will be written into the chip memory to ensure output linearization over the full range.
Long term stability compensation: Some sensors have self calibration or aging compensation algorithms to counteract the slow drift of the sensor over time.
4、 Output and Communication: Presentation and Interaction of Data
The final processed data is visually displayed on a liquid crystal display (LCD) screen. More importantly, its digital interfaces (such as I ² C, SPI, single bus, or industry standard Modbus) allow it to easily connect to data loggers, PLCs, or IoT gateways, enabling remote transmission, recording, and system integration of data.
