Overview of PM2.5 detector for fine particulate matter and the harm of fine particulate matter to human body
Date: 2025-07-31Read: 1

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) detector is a key tool for monitoring the concentration of this harmful pollutant in the air. To understand its importance, it is necessary to first clarify the harm of PM2.5 to the human body, and then understand the working principle, types, and characteristics of the detector.

1、 The serious harm of PM2.5 to the human body

PM2.5 refers to particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of ≤ 2.5 micrometers, also known as "lung accessible particulate matter". Its hazards stem from extremely small particle size, complex composition, and strong penetrability:

Penetrating the human body and breaking through barriers:

Direct airway to alveoli: It can easily pass through the nasal cavity and upper respiratory tract, directly reaching the ends of the bronchi and alveoli.

Entering the bloodstream: Some ultrafine particles (<0.1 microns) can penetrate the alveolar capillary barrier and enter the circulatory system, flowing with the blood to various organs throughout the body.

Main health hazards:

Respiratory system diseases:

Stimulating the respiratory tract, inducing or exacerbating asthma and chronic bronchitis.

Impairment of lung function and increased risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

2、 Overview and Core Features of PM2.5 Detector

The core task of a PM2.5 detector is to quantify the mass concentration of PM2.5 in the air in real-time and accurately (usually measured in μ g/m ³).

Core working principle (mainstream technology):

Laser scattering method: This is the most mainstream technology for consumer grade, portable, and some quasi professional equipment.

Principle: The instrument is equipped with a small fan that draws in air samples and passes them through a detection chamber illuminated by a laser beam. Particles in the air will scatter when passing through the laser. High sensitivity photodetectors (located at specific angles) capture scattered light signals.

Signal processing: The intensity and frequency of scattered light are related to the particle size and quantity of particles. The built-in microprocessor converts the detected scattered light signal into particle mass concentrations of different particle size ranges (mainly PM2.5) based on a preset algorithm model (based on Mie scattering theory).

Advantages: Fast response (from seconds to minutes), small size, low power consumption, relatively low cost, and continuous real-time monitoring.

Main features of the instrument (taking mainstream laser scattering as an example):

Real time monitoring: Provides near real-time concentration readings (usually updated every few seconds to tens of seconds), making it easy to quickly understand changes in air quality.

Portability and ease of use:

Compact in size, suitable for handheld or desktop placement.

Easy to operate, usually one click power on, with intuitive readings displayed on the screen (numbers, color codes, bar charts, etc.).

Multi functional integration (commonly found at the consumer/home level):

Regularly monitor PM10, PM1.0, and particulate matter concentration simultaneously.

Integrated temperature and humidity sensors.

Integrate other gas sensors, such as formaldehyde (HCHO), total volatile organic compounds (TVOC), carbon dioxide (CO2), etc., to provide a more comprehensive assessment of indoor air quality.

Data recording and connection:

Built in memory records historical data (such as hourly average and daily average).

Equipped with USB/Bluetooth/WiFi, connect to mobile apps or computers to enable data viewing, analysis, export, and remote monitoring.

Partial support for cloud platforms for multi device management or viewing regional pollution maps.

Visualization and Alarm:

The screen display is clear (numbers, charts, color indicators - such as green, yellow, orange, and red corresponding to different pollution levels).

Set concentration threshold alarm (sound and light prompt).

Battery powered: convenient for mobile use and emergency monitoring.

Widely applicable: home, office, school, in car, travel, outdoor short-term monitoring, etc.

PM2.5 is an 'invisible health killer', with its tiny particle size allowing it to penetrate into various systems of the human body, causing widespread and serious health problems without an absolute safety threshold. Monitoring PM2.5 concentration is a crucial first step in assessing environmental risks and taking protective measures such as using purifiers, wearing masks, and reducing outdoor activities.

PM2.5 detectors (especially laser scattering type) have become practical tools for household and personal health management due to their real-time, portable, easy-to-use, and relatively reasonable price. It can effectively reflect the trend and relative level of pollution changes.
