Detection Principle

The sulfur dioxide gas is then brought into an absorption bottle containing hydrogen peroxide, which oxidizes it into sulfate ions. Sample pre-treatment:
Accurately weighing a certain amount of traditional Chinese medicine samples usually requires crushing or cutting to ensure the uniformity of the sample.
Place the processed sample into the distillation flask of the distillation apparatus.
Distillation process:
Add an appropriate amount of distilled water and acid (such as hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid) to the distillation flask to help release sulfur dioxide from the sample.
Connect the distillation flask to the distillation apparatus and turn on the heating device to distill the sample under acidic conditions.
During the distillation process, sulfur dioxide is released and collected along with steam. The distilled gas is cooled by a condensing device and forms a liquid that flows into the receiving bottle. The receiving bottle is pre filled with a certain amount of absorbent solution (such as hydrogen peroxide solution) for absorbing sulfur dioxide gas.
Titration analysis:
Take an appropriate amount of absorption solution from the receiving bottle and add an acid-base indicator (such as phenolphthalein or methyl red ethanol solution).
Titrate with a known concentration of alkaline titrant (such as sodium hydroxide standard solution) until the color of the solution changes (such as from colorless to pink, and does not fade within half a minute), which is the endpoint of titration.
Record the volume of alkaline titrant consumed.
Result calculation:
Calculate the content of sulfur dioxide in the sample based on the concentration, volume, and mass of the alkaline titrant consumed for titration, according to the stoichiometric relationship.
Precautions
Instrument calibration: Ensure that the reagents and instruments used meet the testing requirements and are within their validity period. Regularly calibrate and maintain the instruments to ensure the reliability of the test results.
