Imaging principle and key technology analysis of infrared gas thermal imager
Date: 2025-08-14Read: 1
Infrared gas thermal imagerThe imaging principle and key technology analysis are as follows:
1、 Imaging principle
1. Principle of infrared radiation:
All objects above absolute zero (-273 ℃) in the world emit infrared radiation, and the higher the temperature, the stronger the infrared radiation.
Specific gases (such as methane, SF?, VOCs, etc.) have a strong absorption effect on infrared radiation of specific wavelengths.
2. Working principle:
The infrared gas thermal imager receives infrared radiation emitted by objects (including leaked gases) and uses an optical system to focus the infrared radiation onto an infrared detector.
The detector converts the received infrared radiation into electrical signals, which are then subjected to signal processing such as amplification and digitization.
The processed electrical signal is converted into temperature grayscale values, a thermal distribution matrix is constructed, and finally mapped into a pseudo color image (such as red for high temperature display and blue for low temperature display), which is output as a recognizable thermal image on the display screen.
3. Passive imaging technology:
Infrared gas thermal imagerWithout the need for an active light source, it can directly detect temperature or radiation differences between gas and the background environment.
When gas leaks, it will be displayed as different colored shadows in the thermal imager, thus achieving visual detection of gas leaks.

2、 Key Technology Analysis
1. Infrared detector technology:
The infrared detector is the core component of the thermal imager, and its performance directly affects the imaging quality and detection accuracy.
Common infrared detector materials include indium gallium arsenide, mercury cadmium telluride, etc., which have high sensitivity and response speed to infrared radiation.
2. Narrowband filter technology:
In order to detect specific gases, this thermal imager is usually equipped with narrowband filters.
Narrowband filters only receive the infrared band corresponding to the gas absorption peak, thereby improving the specificity and accuracy of detection.
3. Signal processing and image generation technology:
The signal processing process of an infrared gas thermal imager includes steps such as amplification, digitization, and algorithm conversion.
Through advanced image processing algorithms, temperature data is mapped into pseudo color images, allowing for a visual representation of the plume shape and diffusion direction of leaked gas.
4. Non contact and long-distance detection technology:
This thermal imager can detect gas leaks from tens to hundreds of meters away without the need to be close to the leak point.
This technological feature ensures the safety of testing personnel and avoids the risk of entering flammable, explosive, or toxic environments.
5. Quantify leakage intensity and preventive maintenance:
Advanced infrared gas thermal imager can estimate leakage rate and assist in priority sorting.
Through regular inspections, minor leaks can be detected in a timely manner and preventive maintenance can be carried out to avoid developing into major accidents.
Infrared gas thermal imagerWith its unique imaging principles and key technologies, it plays an important role in the field of gas leak detection. With the continuous development of technology, the performance of infrared gas thermal imagers will be further improved, and their application fields will become more extensive.
