Starting from the basics, understand the total hydrocarbon analyzer
Date: 2025-11-18Read: 1
The total hydrocarbon analyzer may use hydrogen flame ionization detection technology or flame ionization detector (FID) technology. Under this technology, hydrogen and VOC free air are burned in a burner in an electric field environment. At high temperatures, the hydrocarbons in the sample gas undergo chemical ionization, forming CHO ions. The detector measures the VOC concentration value by detecting the flow of these ions.
Combustion conversion: By burning the sample, carbon and hydrogen in the sample are converted into carbon dioxide and water. This is based on the combustion characteristics of the sample, which undergoes oxidation reactions under high temperature conditions to decompose hydrocarbons into measurable products.
Product detection: Measure the volume or mass of CO and HO produced. This step is usually completed by specialized devices such as absorption bottles, flow meters, etc. to accurately capture and quantify these products.
Calculate the content: Based on the measured amounts of CO and HO, calculate the total carbon and total hydrogen content in the sample. This method is direct and reliable, suitable for various types of samples, including solid, liquid, and gas samples.
Measurement steps of total hydrocarbon analyzer:
1. Power on preheating: Before use, it is necessary to preheat the device to ensure its normal operation. Generally speaking, it is necessary to preheat for at least 30 minutes to ensure that all components of the instrument reach a stable working state.
2. Sample preparation
-Sample selection: Select representative samples according to testing requirements to ensure that the samples can truly reflect the overall situation of the tested substance. For example, in water quality testing, it is necessary to collect water samples that can reflect the overall characteristics of the water body; For samples such as solid or liquid fuels, sampling must also be carried out according to the prescribed methods.
-Preprocessing: Proper preprocessing of collected samples, such as filtration, dilution, digestion, etc., to remove impurities, reduce concentration to an appropriate range, or make the carbon and hydrogen components in the sample easier to detect. For example, when the total organic carbon and hydrogen content in water is high, dilution may be necessary, while water samples containing suspended solids need to be filtered first.
3. Instrument settings: Based on the characteristics of the sample and testing requirements, set corresponding parameters on the instrument, including measurement mode, range, integration time, temperature control, etc. The reasonable setting of these parameters is crucial for obtaining accurate measurement results.
4. Data collection and analysis: Place the processed samples into the instrument for testing, and the instrument will automatically collect and analyze the data. During this process, attention should be paid to observing the operating status of the instrument and real-time changes in data to ensure the normal progress of the measurement process. After the measurement is completed, relevant data such as the total carbon and hydrogen content in the sample can be obtained.
5. Result verification and recording: To ensure the accuracy and reliability of measurement results, standard substances or standard solutions with known concentrations can be used for calibration and verification. At the same time, record in detail the results of each measurement, sample information, measurement conditions, etc., for subsequent inquiry and analysis.
