Detection and usage method of portable octane number meter1、 Detection principle
The portable octane number meter quickly determines the octane number (RON/MON) and blast resistance index (AKI=(RON+MON)/2) by measuring the dielectric properties of gasoline (such as insulation permeability, electromagnetic induction charge changes) or mid infrared spectral signals, and comparing them with standard parameters in the built-in database. Some models (such as the SHATOX series) can also simultaneously detect diesel cetane number, liquid temperature, and diesel freezing point.
2、 Preparation before use
Equipment inspection
After unboxing, confirm that all components are complete (host, sensors, power adapter, operation manual, etc.).
Check if the sensor surface is smooth and free of scratches, and if it is securely connected to the host.
Confirm that the battery is fully charged (if powered by a battery), or connect to an AC power source.
environmental adaptation
Instrument applicable temperature range: -15 ℃ to 55 ℃ (some models range from -10 ℃ to 40 ℃), humidity ≤ 85% RH.
Avoid using in environments with strong electromagnetic interference or direct sunlight.
Sample preparation
The gasoline to be tested must meet the testing standards (such as no impurities or moisture).
If the sample contains additives (such as metals or ethers), a compatible model (such as OKTNC-1 type) should be selected.
3、 Operation steps
Power-on and warm-up
Press the "ON" button to turn on the device. Some models require a 20 minute preheating time (such as PLD-CX models).
If there is residual oil in the sensor and the display screen shows abnormal values, it is necessary to clean it with petroleum ether and ensure that it evaporates completely.
Sensor cleaning
Clean the sensor with petroleum ether to avoid impurities and oil film interference with the detection results.
After cleaning, air dry naturally or wipe with a clean cloth.
Inject sample
Slowly inject the oil into the sensor until it is completely filled to avoid the formation of bubbles.
If using a beaker for detection, the sensor needs to be inserted into the oil, with the liquid level slightly above the upper plane of the sensor, and lifted up and down several times to remove air.
Data reading and recording
The display screen updates data every 1 second. If the oil temperature is different from the ambient temperature, let it stand for 3 seconds until the temperature is balanced and record the result.
Some models support automatic data storage (such as saving by pressing the "save" button) or outputting results through a printer.
Record octane number (RON/MON), explosion resistance index (AKI), and detection time.
Clean up after testing
Turn off the power and pour out the tested oil.
Clean the sensor with petroleum ether to avoid cross contamination (especially after diesel testing, soak it for 20 minutes before testing gasoline).
When unmanned, the instrument automatically shuts down (usually for 2 minutes).
4、 Key parameters and performance

data outputLCD backlit display, supports printing or storage (some models can store up to 10 sets of data)
5、 Precautions
safe operation
Avoid starting or charging in flammable environments to prevent static sparks.
Stay away from high-temperature components (such as engine exhaust pipes) during testing to prevent sensor damage from heat.
Calibration and maintenance
Regularly calibrate the instrument with standard samples (recommended every 3 months) to ensure accuracy.
The sensor is a precision component to avoid collision or falling. If damaged, please contact the manufacturer for replacement.
troubleshooting
Abnormal measurement value: Check whether the sensor is immersed in oil, whether there is air on the inner wall, or clean the sensor.
Display screen unresponsive: Confirm that the battery is fully charged or the power connection is normal, and restart the instrument if necessary.
Poor repeatability of results: Check if the sample is uniform or recalibrate the instrument.
6、 Application scenarios
Refining and chemical enterprises: Quickly detect the quality of gasoline blending and optimize production processes.
Gas station: Verify the fuel grade on site to prevent substandard products from being sold as good.
Quality Inspection Department: Conduct random checks on the octane rating of gasoline in the market to protect consumer rights.
Laboratory: Conduct in-depth analysis in conjunction with standard engines (CFR) to validate portable instrument data.
