High energy laser focuses on the surface of soil samples, generating local plasma. When free electrons recombine with ionized atomic nuclei and relax back to the ground state, atoms emit light. Due to the emission spectra of each element (and isotope) having extremely narrow line widths, it is possible to directly deconvolve and identify different atomic components in the sample by comparing them with known spectral databases.
