Application of Plant Stem Flow Meter in Agricultural Irrigation Management
Date: 2025-12-18Read: 0
Plant stem flow meterIn agricultural irrigation management, it is used to directly measure the water transport in plants, providing physiological basis for irrigation decisions. Its application has changed the traditional model that only relies on meteorological and soil data, making irrigation more closely related to the actual water consumption status of crops, which helps to improve water use efficiency and crop growth stability.
1. In the application, first undertake real-time monitoring tasks. The device is installed on the main stem or main branch, and continuously records the dynamic changes of fluid flow inside the stem through thermal diffusion or other sensing principles. These data can reflect the water consumption rate of crops under different weather conditions, growth stages, and cultivation conditions. Managers use this to grasp the water consumption patterns of individual or group crops, identify peak water consumption periods and low water consumption stages, and provide basic information for developing differentiated irrigation plans. Compared to methods that rely solely on soil moisture or evaporation, stem flow data more directly reflects crop physiological water requirements and can reduce estimation bias caused by inconsistencies between environmental factors and crop actual water absorption capacity.
2. The determination of irrigation timing and amount can be optimized with the help of data. When the monitoring results show that the stem flow rate continues to be below the appropriate threshold, it indicates insufficient crop water supply and irrigation needs to be initiated in a timely manner to prevent transpiration limitation from affecting photosynthesis and growth; When the stem flow rate tends to be stable and within a reasonable range under sufficient water supply conditions, irrigation can be temporarily suspended to avoid excessive water supply leading to leakage and root hypoxia. By continuously tracking the circadian rhythm and daily changes, the response speed of crops to irrigation can be identified, and the time window for early irrigation can be determined to improve the synchronization between water supply and demand.

3. There are differences in the sensitivity of different crops and varieties to water, and multiple monitoring points can be arranged in the field to compare the water consumption characteristics of different planting areas or varieties. Managers implement variable irrigation based on zoning data, increasing water supply appropriately in high consumption areas and reducing input in low consumption areas, which not only meets crop demand but also saves water resources. For perennial crops such as fruit trees and economic trees, stem flow monitoring can also reveal interannual changes in water use, providing reference for long-term irrigation planning.
4. In the application, it is necessary to ensure the standardization of device installation and data interpretation. The sensor should be fixed in the stable section of the stem to avoid damaging the cambium or interfering with normal tissue transport. The installation position and fixing method should not affect crop growth. The data needs to be comprehensively analyzed by combining meteorological, soil, and crop growth information. A single stem flow value cannot be directly used as an irrigation basis, and should be cross checked with other indicators to prevent abnormal readings from misleading decisions. Regularly calibrate sensors and check transmission links to ensure continuous and reliable data.
5Plant stem flow meterThe application also promotes the shift of irrigation management from experience driven to data-driven. Managers can establish an irrigation trigger mechanism based on stem flow threshold and link it with an automatic control system to achieve a closed-loop monitoring analysis execution. In large-scale agricultural production, multi-point stem flow data can be summarized and analyzed to form a regional crop water consumption map, guiding overall water resource allocation and rotation irrigation plans.
Plant stem flow meterThe value of agricultural irrigation management lies in providing direct evidence of crop water consumption, making irrigation more precise and timely. By rational deployment, standardized use, and multi-source information fusion, stem flow monitoring can be transformed into actionable irrigation strategies, optimizing water resource utilization while ensuring crop growth.
