What are the precautions for using a vertical tube furnace
Date: 2025-10-15Read: 0
Vertical tube furnaceStrictly follow the operating procedures during use to ensure safe and stable operation of the equipment and extend its service life. The following are detailed usage precautions, covering aspects such as preparation before operation, monitoring during operation, safety protection, and maintenance:
1、 Preparation before operation
Equipment inspection
Furnace structure: Check whether the furnace, furnace tubes, heating elements, seals and other components are intact, without cracks, deformations or looseness.
Electrical system: Confirm that the power lines, grounding devices, temperature control instruments, and other electrical components are securely connected without aging or damage.
Gas system: Check whether the gas supply pipelines, valves, flow meters, etc. are well sealed and there is no risk of leakage.
Cooling system: Ensure that water or air cooling devices (such as circulating water pumps and cooling fans) are operating normally and that the cooling water flow is sufficient.
Environmental Requirements
Ventilation conditions: The equipment should be placed in a well ventilated laboratory or workshop to avoid the accumulation of flammable gases.
Explosion proof measures: If flammable gases (such as hydrogen) are used, explosion-proof devices (such as explosion-proof motors and explosion vents) must be equipped.
Space layout: Leave sufficient operating space around the furnace body to avoid contact with flammable and corrosive substances.
Material preparation
Sample compatibility: Confirm that the material to be heated is compatible with the furnace tube material (such as quartz, ceramic, metal) to avoid corrosion or reaction.
Loading capacity: Control the loading capacity of materials to avoid excessive accumulation that may cause uneven temperature or deformation of furnace tubes.
Crucible selection: Use specialized crucibles (such as alumina, graphite) to hold materials and prevent direct contact with furnace tubes.
2、 Running process monitoring
temperature control
Heating rate: Set the heating program according to the process requirements to avoid excessive thermal stress on the furnace tube caused by rapid heating (recommended ≤ 10 ℃/min).
Temperature uniformity: Monitor the temperature at multiple points inside the furnace through thermocouples to ensure a temperature difference of ≤± 5 ℃.
Overtemperature protection: Set a temperature upper limit alarm, and automatically cut off the heating power when the actual temperature exceeds the set value.
Gas management
Flow control: Adjust the gas flow rate according to process requirements (such as inert gas protection and reaction gas introduction) to avoid excessive flow fluctuations.
Gas purity: Use high-purity gas (such as ≥ 99.99%) to prevent impurities from affecting experimental results or corroding furnace tubes.
Exhaust gas treatment: Purification treatment of toxic or flammable exhaust gas (such as alkali absorption, catalytic combustion), and emission after meeting standards.
pressure monitoring
Furnace pressure: If the furnace needs to maintain positive or negative pressure, real-time monitoring through pressure sensors can be used to avoid overpressure or vacuum leakage.
Sealing inspection: Regularly check the sealing parts such as furnace doors and flanges during operation to prevent gas leakage.
3、 Safety protection measures
personal protection
Protective equipment: Wear heat-resistant gloves, protective goggles, and lab coats during operation to prevent burns or splashes.
Emergency stop: Familiarize yourself with the location of the emergency stop button on the equipment, and immediately cut off the power and stop the machine in case of abnormal situations (such as smoke, odor, or abnormal noise).
Fire and explosion prevention
Prohibited area: Flammable materials are not allowed to be placed within 1 meter around the furnace body, and operations should be kept away from open flames.
Static elimination: Use anti-static tools to avoid gas explosions caused by static electricity.
Fire extinguishing equipment: equipped with dry powder fire extinguishers or carbon dioxide fire extinguishers, regularly checked for expiration date.
Electrical safety
Grounding protection: Ensure reliable grounding of equipment to prevent electric leakage and shock.
Insulation inspection: Regularly check the insulation performance of power lines and plugs to avoid aging and damage.
Lightning protection measures: Stop using during thunderstorms to prevent equipment damage from lightning strikes.
4、 Key points of maintenance and upkeep
Daily cleaning
Furnace cleaning: After each experiment, use a soft brush or vacuum cleaner to remove any residue inside the furnace to avoid corrosion of the furnace tubes.
Furnace tube maintenance: Regularly inspect the inner wall of the furnace tube, remove the oxide layer or sediment, and maintain the smoothness.
Seal replacement: If the sealing ring is found to be aging or deformed, it should be replaced in a timely manner to prevent gas leakage.
periodic calibration
Temperature control instrument: Calibrate the temperature sensor and controller every six months to ensure accurate display.
Gas flowmeter: Verify the accuracy of the flowmeter annually to avoid flow errors affecting experimental results.
Pressure gauge: Regularly calibrate the pressure gauge to ensure reliable readings.
Long term disuse treatment
Dry storage: Dry the furnace before use to prevent component corrosion caused by moisture.
Power and gas outage: Turn off the power and gas valve, and disconnect the external connection.
Dust cover: Cover the equipment with a dust cover to prevent dust from entering.
5Vertical tube furnaceSpecial scenario precautions
High temperature operation
Preheating stage: The low-temperature section (such as room temperature to 300 ℃) can quickly heat up, while the high-temperature section (such as ≥ 800 ℃) needs to slow down the rate.
Sampling safety: When sampling at high temperatures, use long handled tools and wear insulated gloves to avoid direct contact with the furnace tube.
vacuum environment
Leakage rate testing: Before using the vacuum furnace, a leakage rate test (such as helium mass spectrometry leak detection) must be conducted to ensure sealing.
Re pressing operation: Slowly introduce gas during vacuum breaking to avoid sudden pressure changes that may cause damage to the furnace body.
Corrosive atmosphere
Material selection: In environments with corrosive gases such as chlorine and sulfur, corrosion-resistant furnace tubes (such as Hastelloy) should be selected.
Post treatment: Immediately after the experiment, inert gas is blown to reduce residual corrosive gases.
